    Eine Jury des deutschen Langenscheidt-Verlags wählt jedes Jahr das sogenannte 'Jugendwort des Jahres'. 2018 fiel diese Wahl auf 'Ehrenmann' bzw. 'Ehrenfrau' im Sinne von 'jemand, der etwas (Besonderes) für einen tut'. In der Folge fand jedoch weder eine öffentliche Auseinandersetzung über die Herkunft des Begriffs statt noch darüber, was Ehre für Jugendliche heute bedeutet. Der Artikel möchte daher zunächst darstellen, was Ehre ist und welche soziale Funktion sie erfüllt, und anschließend die besondere Bedeutung von Ehre für Jugendliche in Migrationssituationen reflektieren. Schließlich folgen eine pop- und jugendkulturelle Analyse der Herkunft und Verwendung des Ausdrucks 'Ehrenmann' (und 'Ehrenfrau') sowie eine abschließende kritische Reflexion der Jurywahl.Every year, a jury of the German Langenscheidt-Verlag chooses the so-called 'youth expression of the year' (Jugendwort des Jahres). In 2018, this choice fell on 'man/woman of honour' (Ehrenmann/Ehrenfrau), in a sense of ‚someone doing something (special) for somebody‘. Interestingly, no public discourse followed to examine the origin of this unusual expression or the meaning of 'honour' for today's youth. The article, therefore, aims to outline what honour is and which social functions it fulfils, and then to reflect the particular significance of honour for adolescents with a migrant background. This is followed by a pop- and youth-cultural analysis of the origin and use of the expression 'man of honour' as well as a concluding critical reflection of the jury's choice

    A Flexible Patch-Based Lattice Boltzmann Parallelization Approach for Heterogeneous GPU-CPU Clusters

    Sustaining a large fraction of single GPU performance in parallel computations is considered to be the major problem of GPU-based clusters. In this article, this topic is addressed in the context of a lattice Boltzmann flow solver that is integrated in the WaLBerla software framework. We propose a multi-GPU implementation using a block-structured MPI parallelization, suitable for load balancing and heterogeneous computations on CPUs and GPUs. The overhead required for multi-GPU simulations is discussed in detail and it is demonstrated that the kernel performance can be sustained to a large extent. With our GPU implementation, we achieve nearly perfect weak scalability on InfiniBand clusters. However, in strong scaling scenarios multi-GPUs make less efficient use of the hardware than IBM BG/P and x86 clusters. Hence, a cost analysis must determine the best course of action for a particular simulation task. Additionally, weak scaling results of heterogeneous simulations conducted on CPUs and GPUs simultaneously are presented using clusters equipped with varying node configurations.Comment: 20 pages, 12 figure

    A luciferase-based quick potency assay to predict chondrogenic differentiation.

    Chondrogenic differentiation of adipose derived stem cells (ASC) is challenging but highly promising for cartilage repair. Large donor variability of chondrogenic differentiation potential raises the risk for transplantation of cells with reduced efficacy and a low chondrogenic potential. Therefore quick potency assays are required in order to control the potency of the isolated cells before cell transplantation. Current in vitro methods to analyze the differentiation potential are time consuming and thus, a novel enhancer and tissue-specific promoter combination was employed for the detection of chondrogenic differentiation of ASC in a novel quick potency bioassay. Human primary ASC were co-transfected with the Metridia luciferase based collagen type II reporter gene pCMVE_ACDCII-MetLuc together with a Renilla control plasmid and analyzed for their chondrogenic potential. On day 3 after chondrogenic induction, the luciferase activity was induced in all tested donors under three dimensional (3D) culture conditions and in a second approach also under 2D culture conditions. With our newly developed quick potency bioassay we can determine chondrogenic potential already after 3 days of chondrogenic induction and under 2D culture conditions. This will enhance the efficiency of testing cell functionality, which should allow in the future to predict the suitability of cells derived from individual patients for cell therapies, in a very short time and at low costs

    The impact of regional origin on the incidence of gestational diabetes mellitus in a multiethnic European cohort

    IntroductionWomen with migration background present specific challenges related to risk stratification and care of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). Therefore, this study aims to investigate the role of ethnic origin on the risk of developing GDM in a multiethnic European cohort.MethodsPregnant women were included at a median gestational age of 12.9 weeks and assigned to the geographical regions of origin: Caucasian Europe (n = 731), Middle East and North Africa countries (MENA, n = 195), Asia (n = 127) and Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA, n = 48). At the time of recruitment maternal characteristics, glucometabolic parameters and dietary habits were assessed. An oral glucose tolerance test was performed in mid-gestation for GDM diagnosis.ResultsMothers with Caucasian ancestry were older and had higher blood pressure and an adverse lipoprotein profile as compared to non-Caucasian mothers, whereas non-Caucasian women (especially those from MENA countries) had a higher BMI and were more insulin resistant. Moreover, we found distinct dietary habits. Non-Caucasian mothers, especially those from MENA and Asian countries, had increased incidence of GDM as compared to the Caucasian population (OR 1.87, 95%CI 1.40 to 2.52, p < 0.001). Early gestational fasting glucose and insulin sensitivity were consistent risk factors across different ethnic populations, however, pregestational BMI was of particular importance in Asian mothers.DiscussionPrevalence of GDM was higher among women from MENA and Asian countries, who already showed adverse glucometabolic profiles at early gestation. Fasting glucose and early gestational insulin resistance (as well as higher BMI in women from Asia) were identified as important risk factors in Caucasian and non-Caucasian patients

    Determinants of legacy effects in pine trees - implications from an irrigation-stop experiment

    Tree responses to altered water availability range from immediate (e.g. stomatal regulation) to delayed (e.g. crown size adjustment). The interplay of the different response times and processes, and their effects on long-term whole-tree performance, however, is hardly understood. Here we investigated legacy effects on structures and functions of mature Scots pine in a dry inner-Alpine Swiss valley after stopping an 11-yr lasting irrigation treatment. Measured ecophysiological time series were analysed and interpreted with a system-analytic tree model. We found that the irrigation stop led to a cascade of downregulations of physiological and morphological processes with different response times. Biophysical processes responded within days, whereas needle and shoot lengths, crown transparency, and radial stem growth reached control levels after up to 4 yr only. Modelling suggested that organ and carbon reserve turnover rates play a key role for a tree's responsiveness to environmental changes. Needle turnover rate was found to be most important to accurately model stem growth dynamics. We conclude that leaf area and its adjustment time to new conditions is the main determinant for radial stem growth of pine trees as the transpiring area needs to be supported by a proportional amount of sapwood, despite the growth-inhibiting environmental conditions.Peer reviewe

    Anxiety disorders in people with epilepsy.

    Anxiety disorders are frequent, though probably underdiagnosed, comorbidities in epilepsy. Epilepsy and anxiety may share common neurobiological correlates as shown in animal models and suggested by studies demonstrating anxiety disorders before the manifestation of epilepsy. Comorbid anxiety disorders have a major impact on the affected patients' quality of life and may increase the risk for suicidality. Successful treatment of the epilepsy may alleviate anxiety symptoms. Treatment of anxiety is based on selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, benzodiazepines (although only as second-line choices), and psychotherapy. Specific AEDs (especially pregabalin) have been shown to have anxiolytic properties. This paper is aimed at reviewing anxiety disorders in patients with epilepsy discussing current scientific evidence about pathophysiology, clinical aspects, and treatment strategies
